Side City Studios is thought to be one of the most authoritative game developers, primarily due to being a pioneer of modern slot game technology. It did so with a revolutionary 3D character generator, which allowed developers to design games with high-definition graphics and 3D animations.
This set Side City Studios apart from the rest, as its gameplay was at the forefront of online casino technology development.
Today, Side City Studios has faded more into the background of the iGaming industry. That said, after being acquired by the NYX Gaming Group in 2015 - one of the largest online gaming groups in the world - I would expect any new releases to have a similar ethos toward industry innovation.
A Mysterious Provider
As I mentioned, Side City Studios has somewhat fallen off the radar in recent years. As such, the Side City Studios game portfolio is rarely at the forefront of any slot-gamer's mind.
In fact, Side City Studios has become a little bit of a mystery. They do have social media, but other than that, there is little information about them online, particularly after the NYX Gaming Group was acquired by Scientific Games in 2018.
You'll also notice that they haven't much in the way of new releases, nor have they teased any upcoming slot games either. This makes the future of this developer pretty mysterious, if you ask me.
Top 3 Side City Studios Slot Games
Carrying on with the mysterious theme, my top three favorite Side City Studios slots all have mystical, spiritual, and historical inspirations:
There's no doubt that Ancient Egypt-themed slots are a bit overdone. However, the futuristic graphics in Egyptian Rise really set it apart from the rest. While it is played on a class 5x3 grid, there are 243 ways to win in this slot game. It also has an RTP of 97.76%.
Fortunes of the Dead is often labeled as a horror-themed slot. However, I think its real charm comes from its inspiration of Dia De Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. This means that it is packed full of vibrant, colorful graphics. The RTP for this slot is 95.79%, and there are 50 paylines.
Whilst some might admittedly not like this nine-year-old game, I actually like the retro, nostalgic feel of Charms and Witches. It has almost a 90s vibe to it, which harks back to cult TV shows like Charmed and Sabrina. The characters shape-shift throughout the game, which makes for an interesting dynamic. It has your standard 5x3 reel setup and an RTP of 95.53%. If nothing else, it's fantastic for Halloween!
Side City Studios Slots: Final Thoughts
Overall, the Side City Studios game library is pretty limited, especially for a provider that has been going for over two decades. It is also let down by having little-to-no new releases. That said, Side City Studios slot games are still worth a play.
